This year our Eemamwiciki learning theme is Weecinaakiiyankwi Weecikaayankwi ‘We Sing Together – We Dance Together.’ Our community will explore this theme in many different ways over the Myaamia lunar year, but during the course of our summer programs, we will learn about how these forms of expression are a part of our lives today as well as the history behind these beautiful forms of expression.

This year, participants in all of our in-person programs will learn about and practice stomp dancing, learn how to participate in an intertribal pow wow dance, and learn how to participate in the teasing songs performed during our mahkisina ‘moccasin’ game. They will also create a šiihšiikwani ‘gourd rattle’ and learn how to incorporate Myaamia music into their lives more generally. One highlight for the Eewansaapita program (10-16-year-olds) is the creation of a music video by recording a song and shooting video footage of the week’s events.

  • A group of children and adults stand in a group singing, dancing and laughing
  • A group of small children line up to dance
  • George sits in a chair holding a small drum
  • A young girl paints a gourd rattle

We look forward to gathering as a community this summer to learn more about song and dance! To learn more or apply for the 2024 programs, visit https://miamination.com/summer-programs
